She Was Never Supposed to Be Here. That's Exactly Why She Is.
HAWTHORNE

Tyra Hawthorne didn't grow up with a roadmap
She grew up with resilience forged in circumstances designed to silence her, in a family navigating trauma, instability, and survival mode on its best days. She moved between states, between schools, between versions of herself
she wasn't sure she'd ever reconcile.
And then, late in high school, she picked up a pair of drumsticks.
A band director at Cass Tech saw something in Tyra that Tyra hadn't yet learned to see in herself. She pushed. Tyra pushed back. And then Tyra pushed through earning a full scholarship to Grambling State University, marching on the drumline from 2000 to 2004, going on to serve in the United States Marine Corps, and beginning the long, nonlinear journey from survival to purpose
.
She didn't take the straight path. She took the true one.

What Tyra believes
She believes your story is your credential. Not a liability. Not a footnote. The lived experience you've been apologizing for is the very thing that qualifies you to lead — when you stop hiding it and start building with it.
She believes healing and leading happen at the same time. You don't finish healing and then start leading. You do both, simultaneously, imperfectly, and with more courage than most people will ever acknowledge.
She believes the next generation deserves more than survival. The children at Heartbeat are not broken. They are brilliant, creative, and resilient beyond measure. Her job is to build environments worthy of who they already are.
Today, Tyra Hawthorne is a CEO, a nonprofit founder, an author in progress, a keynote speaker, and a cultural architect.
She is a mother. A daughter. A Marine. A drummer. A woman who changed what her name means by deciding what she would build with it.
She did not arrive polished. She arrived forged. And she is just getting started.
